Untuk bisa mengalahkan mimic, manusia menciptakan exoskeleton, semacam rangka luar yang digunakan oleh tentara UDF. William Cage yang merupakan seorang tentara berpangkat mayor Amerika Serikat, menolak untuk ikut berperang dalam operasi besar-besaran yang akan memusnahkan mimic. General Brigham Brendan Gleeson sebagai jenderal yang memimpin operasi tersebut, menghukum Cage. Hukuman tersebut mengakibatkan dirinya kehilangan seluruh pangkatnya dan terpaksa bergabung dengan tentara yang akan melaksanakan serangan esok harinya.
